Senior Home Care Questions and Concerns


You should ask as many questions as possible so you feel comfortable when looking for a caregiver for yourself or your loved one.

Are you licensed, bonded and insured? Can you provide personal and professional references? Do you do background checks on your caregivers?

At ElderCare, we screen all our caregivers extensively to insure the highest quality of personnel possible. We are fully licensed, insured, and bonded. Thorough background checks are conducted for all personnel and each meets or exceeds minimum qualifications for criminal backgrounds, motor vehicle driving records, and credit history. Personal and professional references can be provided upon request.


How do you screen your employees?

An extensive screening process is conducted, which includes meeting basic standards for experience, reference-checks, health screening, DMV checks and a national and local criminal records search


How do you train and supervise your home care staff?

All caregivers attend a thorough orientation before beginning an assignment. Licensed nurses supervise care providers and review their care notes relating to any challenges that arise. Situational home care problem solving may then be conducted by care managers, or licensed nurses in combination with on-site training.

ECSU offers regular, ongoing staff's training on care provision and related topics. Many caregivers also receive specialized, comprehensive training in dementia-care-at-home sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association. Additionally, some of the staff takes advantage of training offered by the community-based organizations.


What does it mean that you're "licensed"?

The Nurse Registry license granted ElderCare Services Unlimited Management by the Agency of Health Care Administration of Florida means that ElderCare Services Unlimited meets or exceeds the requirements established by the State. This enables us to administer medications for clients with a physician's order. To retain our license, we undergo a periodic State-review; provide proof of financial responsibility, and institute policies, practices and quality assurance measures that meet state standards.


Are your services covered by insurance?

Our home care and care management services are covered by many long-term care insurance policies. We do not take Medicare or Medicaid in payment for our services.


Do I need to sign a contract?

A Client/Patient Agreement or Confirmation of Care Management form listing services, schedules, rates and more must be signed by the person paying the bill to begin services. These agreements also list client rights and responsibilities, and include a clause requiring 14 days notice of cancellation.


What are your policies and procedures in emergencies i.e. hurricane, flooding, illness etc.?

When selecting an agency, you should ask to see their policies on emergency situations. At ElderCare we have Emergency Procedures in place.

We insure all necessary precautions are taken; food, batteries, water, medications are all fully stocked. Emergency contact numbers, doctors, and medical facilities are on file at all times.


Do I get to interview my caregiver?

Absolutely! At ElderCare you will meet your caregiver ahead of time and if you have any concerns at all, another caregiver will be provided for you.

We understand personalities are different. We want to make sure you are comfortable and completely satisfied with the individual taking care of you or your loved one.


Do I have the same caregiver all of the time?

At ElderCare, if at any time you are unsatisfied with your caregiver, we will replace them with another caregiver immediately. However, if you are satisfied, the same caregiver will remain with you.

ElderCare's policy is to train back-up personnel for emergency and vacation time for your personal caregiver. We want you to be familiar with and feel comfortable with whomever comes into your home.


What are your policies towards gift-giving, tips and other compensation?

ElderCare's policy is firm and simple. We accept no gift other than the satisfaction of giving our best in service.

Our agency's reputation stands on the fact that the caregivers are not allowed to take gifts, tips, or gratuities of any type or kind without the family and/or relatives having proper knowledge. This is for the safety of the client.



Private Care cost verses Agency Care cost?

Both have pros and cons. Private care may be less expensive. Agency care has the capabilities to cover any situation— be it vacation time, illness, or a personal emergency.

Please use caution when selecting anyone who is coming into your home and is personally involved with the safety and livelihood of you or your loved one. At ElderCare, we care!

Okay. So we're a bit selfish. We want you to refer us to your friends! Our reputation depends on YOU. We know if YOU are happy, you will pass the word along. That is why we fully screen all of our caregivers. Screening employees isn't free, but it is well worth the cost in the long run.
